Mae Carol Jemison, a woman from Alabama who graduated at age 35, has set the record as the first African-American woman to go into space.

She completed a mission with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States in 1992 before embarking on an illustrious career.

After setting her record achievement, Mae Carol Jemison, now 66, became an inspiration for many academics worldwide.

She had an interest in science and the arts as a child, and at eleven, she began dancing.

She was accepted to Stanford University in California, the United States, at the early age of 16, where she planned to pursue a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.

She left the university with two Bachelor’s degrees—one in Chemical Engineering and the other in African American Studies—after a remarkable academic career.

An Excellent Academic Career

Mae Carol Jemison enrolled at Cornell University in New York, United States, to pursue a medical degree shortly after receiving two degrees from Stanford University.

In 1981, Mae Carol Jemison added a medical degree to her long list of academic accomplishments, including chemical engineering.

She became an astronaut for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and worked in the Space Center.

In her words:

“I’m not the first woman of colour, the first African-American woman, who had the skills, the talent, the desire to be an astronaut. I know that I happen to be the first one that NASA selected, right now the only one,”

First-class graduate back hawking on the street

In another news, a single mum who graduated with a first-class degree returned to hawking on the street so she could fend for herself and two children.

The Ghanaian woman, identified as Priscilla Akwagu, earned a first-class Bachelor of Arts degree in Twi Education.

During an interview with Joy News, she revealed that although she graduated from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), hawking remains her only source of income.
